Sustainability is one of the most pressing issues of our time. With the goal of meeting the needs of current generations without compromising the future, packaging is taking on an extremely important role in promoting responsible and circular practices. In the context of Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), packaging is at the center of global strategies to reduce waste and promote the circular economy.   Packaging, sustainability, and the role of the responsible consumer: a global challenge. In this article, we explore how packaging can contribute to a sustainable future and the role that the responsible consumer can play in this change.   To learn more: “29th Comieco Report: paper and cardboard recycling in Italy, 2023 marks a new historic record

Packaging and sustainability: the challenge of the 21st century

Eurostat data from 2021 highlight the urgency of the issue: in the EU, 188.7 kg of packaging waste per inhabitant were generated, representing a 10% increase compared to 2020. Among these, 40.3% consists of paper and cardboard, followed by plastic (19%) and glass (18.5%). This increase is mainly due to the growth of e-commerce, home deliveries, and the consumption of take-away products. Packaging sustainability is no longer just an environmental issue, but an economic and social one as well. Target 12.8 of Agenda 2030 emphasizes the importance of educating consumers to adopt more responsible lifestyles, thereby influencing corporate strategies and reducing environmental impact.

The crucial role of packaging

Packaging is not merely a functional element to protect products, but also a medium to communicate values of sustainability and innovation. Packaging choices can significantly influence environmental impact throughout the entire product lifecycle. 1. Waste reduction and recycling Single-use plastic packaging represents a significant challenge. In 2021, each European citizen generated an average of 35.9 kg of plastic packaging waste, with an average recycling rate of 39.6%. Despite past improvements, recycling is not enough to offset the increase in generated waste. A more incisive approach is needed, one that promotes recyclable materials like paper and cardboard, which are easily integrated into a circular economy. 2. Innovations in sustainable packaging Alternative materials, such as cardboard functionalized with mineral coatings, are revolutionizing the packaging industry. This type of packaging is resistant to moisture, grease, and temperature, guaranteeing the same functionality as single-use plastic but with a significantly reduced environmental impact. Cart-One offers recyclable cardboard packaging solutions designed to meet sustainability needs and high performance. 3. Reusable packaging Although reusable packaging offers advantages in specific contexts like school cafeterias or airports, its environmental impact depends heavily on the washing phase and the efficient management of returns. In many cases, recycled cardboard remains the most practical and sustainable choice, especially for food products and beverages.

The responsible consumer: driver of change

Consumers play a fundamental role in the transition toward a more sustainable economy. According to a PwC study, 78% of people are willing to pay more for products made with recycled or eco-friendly materials. This data underscores the importance for companies to invest in sustainable practices and communicate them transparently. Evolving behaviors:

  • 54% of Italians have chosen different brands in favor of more sustainable packaging.
  • 18% stopped buying products with packaging deemed non-ecological.
  • 59% of consumers prefer packaging without excess wrapping.

These numbers prove that sustainability is no longer an option, but an indispensable requirement for companies that want to remain competitive in the market.

The regulatory scenario: Europe at the forefront

From the European Green Deal to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the European Union is working to harmonize regulations and promote a sustainable economic model. Among the most relevant initiatives we find:

  • Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD): to integrate human rights and the environment into corporate governance.
  • Circular Economy Action Plan: with over 30 points aimed at the prevention and reduction of packaging waste.
  • Nature Restoration Law: to restore degraded ecosystems.

These measures represent a challenge, but also an opportunity for companies to innovate and contribute to a more sustainable future.

News on packaging regulations: towards safe, sustainable, and circular packaging
December 16, 2024, marks a decisive turning point for the packaging sector: the Council formally adopted the new regulation on packaging and packaging waste. This regulatory innovation, detailed in the PPWR special by ItaliaImballaggio, represents the latest evolution for a sector that, throughout its entire lifecycle, is moving towards more responsible and sustainable management.   News on packaging regulations: towards safe, sustainable, and circular packaging. In this article, we will explore the changes introduced, the implications for different application sectors, and the key role that efficient packaging can play in a circular economy strategy. Discover how these rules can transform your business and how Cart-One stands as a strategic partner in this transition.   Read also: “CE marking of machinery: what changes with the EU/2023/1230 regulation”   Safe, sustainable, and recyclable packaging: the new requirements The new regulation provides a series of ambitious targets for 2030 and 2040, aimed at promoting packaging that reduces environmental impact throughout its lifecycle. Among the main requirements are: Recycled content: by 2040, single-use plastic bottles must contain up to 65% recycled material, a key milestone to reduce dependence on virgin raw materials. Weight and volume reduction: the new rules require minimizing both the weight and volume of packaging, eliminating superfluous wrapping and optimizing design to reduce waste. Limitation of hazardous substances: substances of concern will also be reduced, for example by limiting the placement on the market of packaging in contact with food products that contains PFAS above certain thresholds. Labeling and information: requirements regarding labeling and marking aim to make sorting and proper disposal of packaging easier for the consumer, facilitating more conscious purchasing choices.   Restrictions on single-use plastic packaging The regulation introduces specific measures to limit the use of single-use plastic, particularly targeting: Pre-packaged fruit and vegetable products, especially if the weight is less than 1.5 kg. Food and beverages served in hotels, bars, and restaurants, with special attention to individual portions of condiments, sauces, cream, and sugar. Small single-use cosmetic and personal hygiene products typical of the hospitality sector (for example, shampoo bottles or lotions). Ultra-lightweight plastic bags, those often provided in markets for bulk food items. These restrictions are designed to encourage the adoption of alternative materials and drastically reduce the amount of single-use plastic that ends up in landfills.   Reuse targets and refill obligations The regulation sets new binding reuse targets for 2030 and indicative targets for 2040, diversified depending on the type of packaging. For example, for packaging intended for transport and sale, a binding target of 40% is planned, while for grouped packaging the target is set at 10%. Furthermore, businesses operating in the take-away sector will be obliged to offer customers the option of using personal containers, allowing them to be filled with food and beverages at no additional cost. This measure not only favors reuse but also encourages more sustainable consumption behaviors.   The packaging lifecycle and the new regulatory vision Despite progress in recycling, the EU still records high packaging waste production: in 2022, nearly 186.5 kg of waste were generated per inhabitant, with 36 kg from plastic alone. This scenario highlights how the amount of waste exceeds that of recycled material, making an update to the regulatory framework essential. The proposal to revise Directive 94/62/EC, now transformed into a regulation (PPWR), was conceived to promote a transition towards a circular economy and to steer Europe towards climate neutrality. The European Parliament and the Council agreed on their positions and, following a provisional agreement reached on March 4, 2024, the regulation will enter into force 18 months after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.   The role of Cart-One in the transition towards innovative packaging In this evolving regulatory context, Cart-One confirms itself as a strategic partner for companies wishing to align with the new regulations and adopt cutting-edge packaging solutions. Packaging: paper is the fastest-growing food packaging material
The world of food packaging is undergoing a true revolution, driven by an extremely promising protagonist: paper. Packaging: paper is the fastest-growing food packaging material. As environmental concerns rise and consumers become increasingly aware of their choices, the food packaging industry is shifting toward sustainable and innovative solutions. In this context, paper emerges as the fastest-growing material, bringing a range of benefits that go far beyond environmental sustainability. Read also: “Reducing the environmental impact of packaging: what Europe mandates” Sustainability comes first One of the primary reasons paper is experiencing strong growth as a food packaging material is its eco-sustainability. Unlike traditional plastic packaging options, paper is biodegradable and compostable. This characteristic not only reduces negative environmental impacts but also meets the demands of a market increasingly focused on sustainability. Consumers actively seek products that reflect their ecological values, making paper an attractive option for brands wishing to stand out. Saying goodbye to plastic has become more and more important for modern consumers, and paper packaging is rapidly becoming the answer to this need. An increasing number of Italian families are embracing the idea of more sustainable packaging, with 65% in 2022 choosing a product specifically because of its eco-friendly packaging. Meanwhile, 19% gave up on buying a product due to its unsustainable packaging. Versatility and adaptability Paper offers high versatility, adapting to a wide range of packaging needs. From bags to boxes, and from tissue paper to folding containers, paper lends itself to multiple applications without compromising food quality or safety. Its flexibility allows packagers to create tailor-made solutions that meet the specific preservation and presentation needs of each product. According to research by Nomisma, the trend toward paper and cardboard is not just about beverages, but is gaining ground in every food sector, from fruit and vegetables to frozen foods. This reflects a significant cultural shift, with consumers placing higher value on packaging sustainability in every single part of their shopping cart. The power of recycling Italy has proven to be a powerhouse in recycling, generating 1 billion and 525 million euros in environmental benefits in 2021 through packaging recycling and recovery, according to the Conai Sustainability Report. This not only helps to save raw materials but also significantly reduces primary energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Italy, already a European leader in per capita packaging recycling, is in a privileged position to guide Europe toward a more sustainable future. Protection and freshness Contrary to common perception, paper is not just a sustainable choice, but also offers effective protection for food. Thanks to advancements in paper production technology, it is possible to develop solutions that maintain food freshness, protecting products from external factors such as light and moisture. This translates into longer shelf life for food products and a reduction in waste. Beyond practical aspects, paper also helps enhance the consumer experience. Its tactile and visual nature creates a unique sensory experience, evoking a sense of authenticity and connection with the product. Brands can leverage this feature to communicate their commitment to sustainable practices and create an emotional bond with consumers. Cart-One has always been a promoter and implementer of the circular economy—the produce-consume-regenerate-recover model—ensuring that our production waste becomes a paper reel and, ultimately, a box once again within our facilities.
