The FEFCO code: the universal reference in cardboard packaging

Staff Cart-One 17/06/2026 0

In the world of corrugated cardboard packaging, companies, suppliers, and customers must communicate technical specifications every day to guarantee efficiency, quality, and reliability. To facilitate this process, a shared language was introduced: the FEFCO code. The FEFCO code: the universal reference in cardboard packaging. Created by the Fédération Européenne des Fabricants de Carton Ondulé in the 1960s, this coding system transformed the design and management of cardboard packaging, allowing the entire supply chain to work with a single reference. A simple and intuitive numerical code replaces complex descriptions and makes communication between designers, manufacturers, and customers much more streamlined. Why is the FEFCO code so effective?

The FEFCO code is a technical tool that offers concrete advantages along the entire value chain. Each number represents a type of box, vassoio or component, with well-defined and internationally shared characteristics. Thanks to this coding:

  • collaboration between companies and suppliers is facilitated, even on a global level;
  • design and production processes are simplified;
  • logistics are optimized, thanks to already tested standard formats;
  • the traceability of packaging is improved in every operational phase;
  • the design of more efficient and sustainable solutions is supported.

Adopting this language allows for greater consistency in work and guarantees the final customer a reliable, functional product designed according to shared quality parameters.

The categories of the FEFCO code

The FEFCO system is structured into nine large families, each with a specific function in the world of packaging.

  • 0200 Slotted boxes These are the classic packaging boxes, such as the FEFCO 0201, also known as a slotted box (scatola americana). Easy to assemble and highly versatile, they are ideal for transport and storage.
  • 0300 Telescopic boxes Composed of multiple overlapping elements, these boxes offer high resistance and are perfect for protecting sensitive or bulky objects.
  • 0400 Trays Used both for display and for holding small products, trays represent a functional solution for logistics and retail.
  • 0500 Slide boxes Characterized by an inner part that slides into an outer shell, they guarantee excellent protection and a neat appearance.
  • 0600 Rigid boxes (with double walls) They offer greater solidity and protection, making them suitable for fragile or heavy items.
  • 0700 Pre-glued boxes They come ready-to-use, speeding up packaging operations and improving production efficiency.
  • 0800 E-commerce boxes Designed for shipping, they offer security, practicality, and a well-crafted unboxing experience.
  • 0900 Interior fitments Dividers, inserts, and accessories that complete the structure of the packaging, making it more functional and protective.

This classification covers all market needs, promoting customization within a shared standard framework.

The added value of sustainability

Corrugated cardboard packaging, in addition to being functional and safe, represents an excellent choice for those aiming for environmental sustainability. Standardized FEFCO models allow for precise design, avoiding waste and reducing the excessive use of material. Furthermore, the recyclable and biodegradable nature of corrugated cardboard makes it one of the greenest solutions on the market. In line with European circular economy objectives, the FEFCO system integrates perfectly into a logic of conscious and low-environmental-impact production. It is therefore a concrete ally for businesses wishing to combine efficiency and responsibility.

More and more agricultural businesses are choosing sustainable packaging
In recent years, the agricultural sector has undergone a profound transformation, driven by the urgent need to adopt sustainable packaging to reduce environmental impact and meet new market expectations. More and more agricultural businesses are choosing sustainable packaging. Agricultural companies, both large and small, are redefining their packaging strategies by turning to eco-friendly, recyclable, and biodegradable materials, in line with European directives promoting the circular economy. Read also: “Overpackaging: sustainable packaging starts with simplicity” Regulatory Drivers and European Policies In 2024, the European Parliament strengthened regulations on packaging and packaging waste to encourage supply chains, including the agri-food sector, to invest in green solutions that reduce waste and pollution. The goal is to reduce waste generation, increase the share of recyclable packaging, and discourage the use of non-compostable plastics. The key points of the new regulation are: Reduction of single-use packaging; Incentives for the adoption of biodegradable and compostable bioplastics; Mandatory clear labeling to facilitate waste separation and recycling; Promotion of eco-friendly packaging design. The Most Widely Used Materials in Sustainable Agricultural Packaging Italy ranks among the most advanced countries in the field of sustainable packaging, thanks to research and innovation in raw materials. Among the materials most commonly used by agricultural companies for sustainable packaging is corrugated cardboard, chosen for its light weight and ease of recycling, making it ideal for packaging fruit and vegetable products. Recycled paper is used for boxes and cartons, offering a low environmental impact alternative. The adoption of compostable bioplastics, derived from plant-based sources, is becoming increasingly widespread, particularly for bags and protective films used in agriculture. Another example is molded pulp, valued for its biodegradability and protective properties, and widely used in trays and egg packaging. These materials meet both preservation and transportation needs, integrating seamlessly into the new models of sustainable supply chains adopted by the agricultural sector. The Perspective of Italian Agricultural Businesses A recent survey by Coldiretti shows that more than 60% of agricultural businesses consider packaging sustainability a strategic driver of competitiveness. Choosing green packaging represents a dual opportunity: enhancing the value of agricultural products while improving corporate reputation among consumers, who are increasingly sensitive to environmental issues. Consumer Impact and the Role of Large-Scale Retail The ongoing transformation also reflects changing consumer habits in Italy: for 74% of consumers, the presence of sustainable packaging is a key factor when purchasing agri-food products. Large-Scale Retail Distribution (GDO) plays a significant role by steering suppliers toward eco-packaging solutions and encouraging low-impact supply chains. Sustainable packaging is perceived not only as a guarantee of product quality but also as a distinctive sign of the social and environmental responsibility of agricultural businesses. Beyond Materials: Innovation in Design and Life Cycle Management The commitment to sustainable packaging goes beyond material selection. The most innovative companies are investing in: Design for recycling: packaging made up of easily separable components. Collection and return systems for customer packaging; The use of low-energy-consumption processes with reduced CO₂ emissions. These approaches, based on the principles of environmental sustainability and eco-design, help close the packaging life cycle and reduce the risk of improper disposal. Concrete Benefits and Future Prospects Adopting eco-friendly packaging solutions allows agricultural businesses to: Access new markets; Improve product traceability through sustainable digital labeling; Reduce waste management and disposal costs; Strengthen competitiveness and brand positioning within the sustainable agri-food supply chain. The transition toward sustainable packaging in agriculture is expected to accelerate in the coming years, driven by the expectations of younger generations and the growing demand for “green” products. Italy is the European leader in waste recovery, recycling and circular economy
Our country is a reference at a European level for the attention shown towards the sustainability of production activities, waste recycling and the circular economy. Some key indicators for understanding the sustainability of a national economy are: the waste recycling rate, the use of secondary materials in the economy, productivity and per capita consumption of resources. The waste recycling rate in Italy is 79%, against a European average of 38% and 43% in Germany. The productivity of the use of resources is 3.64%, against 2.2% in the EU and 2.54% in Germany; the circularity rate of the material is 19.3% against 11.9 and 12.2% respectively. In particular, excellent results were achieved in the paper and cardboard supply chain, with a recovery of more than 5 million tons, which reaches 80% in the case of packaging. Each percentage point of growth in paper recycling is equivalent to a reduction of 84,000 tons of waste to be disposed of. In 2018, the industrial recycling of paper in Italy made it possible to avoid energy consumption of 1.5 million TOE and climate-altering emissions of 4.4 million tons of CO2 equivalent. Thanks to this policy, Italy saves 23 million tons of oil equivalent every year and the emission of 63 million tons of CO2. Maximum commitment to maintaining "absolute leadership" in the circular economy was ensured by the Minister of Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani. For the vice president of Confindustria with responsibility for the environment and sustainability, Maria Cristina Piovesana, it is essential to invest in the circular economy and ecological transition by seizing all the opportunities offered by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
